Applying for a job
I haven't heard back from the employer, what should I do?
One-off and casual jobs are normally filled within a week while permanent jobs can take longer. Sometimes it can take a few weeks to hear back from the employer.
If you're waiting to hear back, there are a few things you can do.
Make sure to review the job description thoroughly before applying to ensure you've included everything required, such as a portfolio or other requested documents. If your application appears under the Unsuccessful tab, it means you were not successful this time.
If your application is moving to the next stage, the employer will contact you directly. Employers receive a high volume of job applications, and while we encourage them to provide updates, they may not always do so. If you haven’t heard back in a while, we recommend continuing to explore new opportunities.
Contact Student Job Search. Our friendly team may be able to help. Email us at student@sjs.co.nz.
What should I do if I no longer want the job I’ve applied for?
If you haven't been hired for the job yet, you can withdraw your application. This can be done in your Job Applications in your student profile.
If you have been offered the job, you'll need to contact the employer directly to inform them of your decision.
Remember it's against our Rules of Conduct to not show up for a job that you've committed to. Failing to adhere to our Rules of Conduct may result in your Student Job Search account being suspended.
Is it best to apply for lots of jobs, or just a few?
You can apply for as many jobs as you want, as long as you're willing and available to do the work. If you're applying for lots of jobs, make sure you manage them on your account - and withdraw from any roles that you are no longer interested in.
Make sure you consider what the employer is looking for and apply for the ones that you're most suitable for.
Why am I receiving the 'invalid data / unauthenticated error' while applying for a job?
The ‘invalid data’ error may be occurring due to one or more of the common reasons listed below. Please follow these steps to troubleshoot:
Step 1: Refresh the page
If you've been inactive for 30+ minutes, you'll be logged out automatically, causing an error on submission. Simply refresh, log back in, and reapply.
Step 2: Upload required documents
An error may occur if you have not uploaded required documents. Here are some examples.
CV: If the role requires uploading a CV, click the red circle to select your saved CV or upload a different CV if needed (see image).
If you've been inactive for 30+ minutes, you'll be logged out automatically, causing an error on submission. Simply refresh, log back in, and reapply.
Work visa: If the role requires uploading a ‘work visa’ even if you are an NZ citizen if this field has been selected by an employer. You can upload a placeholder document (e.g., a Word file stating "NZ Citizen"). We're working to improve this feature!
Other required documents: Ensure you upload all the documents with the ‘required’ tag in the dropdown and select the correct file option each time (see image).
Step 3: Clear your cache
This is straightforward but differs depending on the brower you use. Here are some common browser instructions: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari.
Step 4: Update your profile to match application details
Ensure all mandatory fields on your profile (marked with * sign) are completed. Updating details like study dates or your major during a job application can lead to errors if they don't match your profile. It’s best to update your profile fully before applying.
Your feedback helps us to fine-tune our service, and it would be greatly appreciated if you could fill in this form to let us know what solution worked so we improve the experience for other students.
Rights & responsibilities
Am I responsible for my own tax?
In most cases, your employer will provide a tax form and deduct tax from your wages. But there are some special cases where this may not be the case, particularly if you've been employed to do work in a household environment.
Private domestic workers – such as home-helpers, caregivers, nannies, gardeners and domestic odd-jobbers – may classify as an IR56 taxpayer. This means that the employee is responsible for their own tax. Self-Employed Contractors this includes roles where you need to provide the employer with invoices for your services or work completed. Or where you're working solely on a commission basis and earning a percentage of a sale. In these cases, you're responsible for paying your own tax, ACC levies, and any other associated costs.
You can pay tax yourself using the IRD Website or for a small fee, use a third party to do it for you such as Hnry. Learn more about income tax here.
I have an issue with an employer. What should I do?
Student Job Search is an employment platform connecting tens of thousands of students with employers every year. By agreeing to our Terms and Conditions, students understand all employment responsibility lies between with you and your employer, not SJS.
We're neither the employer nor employee. This means:
By agreeing to our Terms and Conditions, employers are agreeing to abide by all New Zealand laws and regulations related to our services.
If you've got an employment related issue with an employer, we recommend you speak to someone who is qualified to give you employment advice. You can also find more information on your rights and responsibilities here.
If you think an employer has breached our terms and conditions, please reach out to us at info@sjs.co.nz.
How does Student Job Search check employers?
Our platform filters through all jobs and flags any that may be offensive or questionable for the welfare of students. These jobs that are flagged are then checked by a team member and removed or corrected.
Students can also flag jobs they have concerns about. A Student Job Search team member will then check the job and take the necessary action.
If you find a job that you have concerns about get in touch with the team.
Email: info@sjs.co.nz
Does Student Job Search refuse to list certain types of jobs?
Yes. Any job that doesn't adhere to our Code of Conduct won't be listed or will be removed when it's reviewed by staff. If you've seen a job that you are concerned about, please get in touch with the team.
Email: info@sjs.co.nz
Can Student Job Search suspend employers?
Yes, employers can be suspended from listing jobs on Student Job Search. Employers can also be banned from using our services indefinitely. In this case, the employers can't list a job through Student Job Search using the contact details registered within their profile, and any further accounts created by this employer will also be blocked when identified.
If you've had a bad experience with an employer, please get in touch with the team.

However, we can provide some practical tips to support students who may have experienced a challenge in the workplace or refer you to Employment New Zealand or WorkSafe who can provide you with free advice on your matter depending on the nature of your concern.
Things we do to help resolve issues include:
- Talking an issue through with employers and students.
- Suspending or banning employers from our services if we believe they haven't complied with our Terms and Conditions.
